A lot of yards have that awkward in-between zone - the area around a patio or outdoor living space that just never looks finished. No real edge, no definition. Mulch creeping everywhere, and the whole thing feeling a little rough around the edges. That's exactly what we were dealing with here in Branchburg.
We installed a curved retaining wall that wraps around the planting bed and helps separate the outdoor living area from the surrounding lawn. The curve wasn't just a design choice - it follows the natural flow of the space and softens what could have been a boxy, rigid look. Getting that curve right took planning, and we're happy with how it came together.
Once the wall was in, we packed fresh dark mulch into the bed and ran a clean line of decorative rock along the base of the wall. That rock detail is doing more than just looking good - it helps with drainage and keeps the mulch from washing down onto the stamped concrete walkway. Less cleanup, less maintenance, cleaner look year-round.
The whole thing ties back to something we believe pretty firmly: hardscaping and landscaping work best when they're done together. The wall gives the bed structure. The mulch and rock finish it. And the stamped concrete path pulls it all into one cohesive space. Nothing feels like an afterthought.
When it's all said and done, the yard just works better now. The space has clear boundaries, the planting area looks intentional, and the upkeep going forward is a lot more manageable for the homeowner. That's the goal on every job we do.
